A workable definition of Addiction

I meet people everyday who tell me they are NOT Alcoholic or an addict. . .but don’t know what IS an alcoholic/addict!  How do you know that you are not something if you don’t know what that something is.  A thumbnail question you might ask yourself is:  “Do normal drinkers do this?”  In other words is it normal for drinkers to hide or lie about their drinking.  If you do then you may have a problem with drinking.  Here are a couple of definitions most people can wrap their minds around: 1. An alcoholic is someone whose drinking causes a continuing problem in any department of his/her life.(Marty Mann quote)

2. The alcoholic is the excessive drinker who gets into serious difficulty with his drinking and who generally cannot stop (loss of control), even if he wants to, without outside help. (John Ford quote)

Okay. . . this is my workable definition(s) of addiction/alcoholism. . .anybody whose drinking or drugging causes severe life problems is probably an addict.  . .what kind of problems?. . . .more symptoms and AMA definitions to come. . . . Jeff
